Cytopathology

Finding a sudden lump under your skin, or being told by a doctor that you need a cancer screening, can instantly bring a wave of worry. It is completely natural to feel anxious when facing the unknown. But the fastest way to overcome that fear is to get clear, accurate, and rapid answers.

At Indraprastha Hospital, Panipat, our Cytopathology Department is dedicated to providing those answers safely and quickly. By looking at the very building blocks of your body—your cells—our expert pathologists can detect diseases, infections, and even early signs of cancer long before they become major health threats. We combine state-of-the-art microscopic technology with a deeply compassionate approach, ensuring that your testing experience is gentle, fast, and highly reliable.

What Exactly is Cytopathology?

Medical terms can often sound intimidating, but breaking them down makes them much easier to understand. The word “cyto” simply means cell. “Pathology” is the study of disease. Therefore, Cytopathology is the science of looking at individual cells under a microscope to see if they are healthy or sick.

Think of it like looking at the leaves of a tree. If a tree is sick, you do not necessarily need to chop down the whole trunk to figure out what is wrong. You can just pluck a few leaves, examine them closely, and find out if there is an infection or a disease. Cytopathology does exactly this for your body. Instead of performing a major surgery to cut out a large piece of tissue (which is called a biopsy or histopathology), our doctors use very gentle methods to collect just a tiny cluster of loose cells. It is less painful, involves little to no recovery time, and provides vital clues about your health in record time.
Our laboratory is fully equipped to perform a wide range of cellular tests. We ensure that every sample is prepared meticulously and examined by highly experienced pathologists. Here are the most common procedures we perform:
If you or your doctor discover a lump—whether it is an enlarged lymph node, a thyroid nodule, or a breast lump—FNAC is usually the first step to checking it.

How it works in simple terms: The doctor uses an ultra-thin needle (even thinner than the one used to draw blood) to gently pull a tiny amount of fluid and cells out of the lump.

Does it hurt? It generally feels like a quick, minor pinch. It does not require any stitches, leaves no scars, and only takes a few minutes to complete. Once the cells are drawn, our pathologists look at them under a high-powered microscope to tell you exactly what the lump is made of—giving you peace of mind fast.
The Pap smear is one of the most powerful, life-saving tests available in modern women’s healthcare. It is a simple screening tool used to check the health of the cervix (the lower part of the uterus).

How it works in simple terms: During a routine check-up, a doctor gently swabs the surface of the cervix to collect a few loose cells.

Why it matters: This test can find “pre-cancerous” cells. This means our lab can spot unhealthy cellular changes years before they ever turn into cancer, allowing doctors to treat the issue completely and keep you safe.
Sometimes, due to illness or infection, the body collects excess fluid in places where it shouldn’t—such as around the lungs, the heart, or inside the belly.

How it works in simple terms: Your doctor will safely drain a small amount of this trapped fluid and send it to our lab. We spin the fluid down to isolate the cells floating inside it. By examining these cells, we can quickly tell if the fluid buildup is caused by a simple infection, inflammation, or something more serious.
If a patient has a severe, long-lasting cough or a suspected lung issue, doctors may request a sputum test. Sputum is the thick mucus that is coughed up from deep within the lungs. By looking at the cells trapped in this mucus, our pathologists can identify severe lung infections or detect early signs of lung disease.

Why Would Your Doctor Order a Cytopathology Test?

Doctors rely on cytopathology because it is one of the safest and fastest ways to investigate a health concern. You might be asked to visit our cytopathology lab for a few common reasons:

  • You have found a new, unexplained swelling, nodule, or lump (such as on your neck, breast, or under your arms).
  • You are due for a routine women’s health screening to prevent cervical cancer.
  • Your doctor has noticed an abnormal buildup of fluid in your body and needs to know what is causing it.
  • You have a persistent cough or infection that needs closer microscopic investigation.
