Blood Bank & Transfusion Services

When a patient needs blood during surgery, after a road accident, during childbirth, or in the course of cancer treatment — there is no substitute and no delay acceptable. IPIMS Hospital’s licensed Blood Bank and Transfusion Services unit ensures that safe, screened, and compatible blood and blood components are available to patients whenever they are needed.

Our blood bank operates within the hospital campus on Main G.T. Road, Panipat, serving patients admitted across all departments from emergency trauma cases to planned surgical procedures.

A Licensed, Fully Equipped Blood Bank

IPIMS Hospital’s blood bank is licensed under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and operates in compliance with the National Blood Policy and guidelines of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). Every unit of blood collected, processed, and issued follows strict regulatory and safety protocols.

Our blood bank is equipped with:

  • Refrigerated blood component storage units with continuous temperature monitoring
  • Blood grouping and cross-matching laboratory
  • Component separation equipment for preparation of packed red cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma (FFP), and cryoprecipitate
  • Automated blood screening systems for infectious disease testing
  • 24×7 technical and medical staff availability

Blood Collection and Donor Management

IPIMS Hospital accepts voluntary blood donations from healthy donors. Walk-in donors are welcome at our blood bank during designated hours. Our trained staff guide donors through the eligibility screening process, collection, and post-donation care.

We also coordinate replacement donation — where a patient’s family members or friends donate blood to replenish the blood bank stock used during the patient’s treatment.

Blood Bank & Transfusion Services

Our blood bank follows strict safety protocols and advanced practices to ensure safe, reliable, and timely transfusion support.

1

Blood Grouping & Cross-Matching

  • ABO and Rh blood grouping
  • Compatibility cross-matching before transfusion

Every unit is carefully tested to prevent transfusion reactions and ensure patient safety.

2

Infectious Disease Screening

  • HIV
  • Hepatitis B
  • Hepatitis C
  • Syphilis
  • Malaria (where applicable)

Only thoroughly screened and safe blood units are released for transfusion.

3

Blood Component Therapy

  • Packed Red Blood Cells (PRBC)
  • Platelets
  • Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP)
  • Cryoprecipitate

Component-based transfusion ensures targeted treatment and optimal utilization of each donation.

4

Emergency Blood Supply

Our blood bank maintains ready stock for 24/7 emergency support, ensuring immediate availability for trauma, surgeries, and critical care cases.

5

Blood Donation Services

We actively promote voluntary blood donation and organize donation camps to support life-saving needs.

  • Age: 18–65 years
  • Minimum weight: 45 kg
  • Haemoglobin: 12.5 g/dL or above
  • No donation in the last 3 months
  • No active illness or infection
  • Not pregnant or breastfeeding

Donors receive a complimentary basic health check-up at the time of donation.

Our Pharmacists: More Than Just Dispensing

  • At IPIMS Hospital, our pharmacists are an active part of your care team — not just counter staff. Before dispensing, they:

    • Verify the prescription for completeness and legibility
    • Check for known drug allergies flagged in the patient record
    • Counsel patients on how and when to take each medicine
    • Explain potential side effects to watch for
    • Advise on storage — which medicines need refrigeration, which must be kept away from light
    • Clarify any doubts about dosage for elderly patients, children, or patients with kidney or liver conditions

If you have any confusion about your prescription after leaving the doctor’s chamber, our pharmacists are your first point of contact.

For Admitted Patients

  • For patients who are admitted to IPIMS Hospital’s wards or ICU, medicines are supplied directly to the nursing station from our pharmacy. The ward pharmacist coordinates with the nursing team to ensure timely availability of all prescribed drugs, IV fluids, and consumables.

Family members of admitted patients do not need to visit outside pharmacies — everything required during the hospital stay is available internally and charged transparently to the patient’s billing account.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Our blood bank maintains stock of the most common blood groups. For rare blood groups or large volumes required for major surgery, we recommend advance intimation to the blood bank team so stock can be arranged in time.
Every unit is tested for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, syphilis, and malaria before use. Cross-matching is done before every transfusion. These steps together make transfusion at IPIMS Hospital as safe as current medical science allows.
Yes — this is called directed or replacement donation. Family members or friends can donate at our blood bank, and the units are credited to the patient's account.
Routine cross-matching takes approximately 45–60 minutes. In emergency situations, emergency release protocols allow blood to be issued faster in coordination with the treating doctor.
No. The human body replaces the donated blood volume within 24–48 hours and fully replenishes red blood cells within a few weeks. Most donors feel completely normal within a few hours of donation.
