What is a Bronchoscopy?
A bronchoscopy is a highly effective, minimally invasive diagnostic procedure used to look directly at the inside of your lungs and air passages.
During the procedure, a pulmonologist carefully passes a bronchoscope—a thin, flexible tube equipped with a tiny light and a high-definition camera—through your nose or mouth, down your throat, and into your lungs. This gives the doctor a live, brilliantly clear video feed of your trachea (windpipe) and bronchi (the major air passages in the lungs), allowing them to spot inflammation, tumors, blockages, or bleeding that might not show up on a standard X-ray.
When is this Procedure Used? (Common Indications)
Doctors do not order a bronchoscopy for a common cold. This specialized procedure is utilized when standard tests (like blood work or chest X-rays) cannot fully explain a respiratory issue. Your physician or pulmonologist will typically recommend a bronchoscopy in the following scenarios:
- Unexplained Chronic Cough: If you have had a severe cough lasting more than three months that does not respond to standard medication.
- Hemoptysis (Coughing up Blood): To immediately locate the source of bleeding in the respiratory tract.
- Abnormal Scans: To investigate suspicious shadows, spots, or masses found on a Chest X-ray or CT scan.
- Suspected Deep Infections: To collect fluid samples directly from the lungs to diagnose severe infections like Tuberculosis (TB) or complex pneumonia.
- Vocal Cord Issues: To investigate chronic hoarseness or vocal cord paralysis.
- Foreign Object Removal: In emergencies, to remove inhaled objects (like a piece of food) or thick mucus plugs blocking the airways.
The most common procedure, used purely to visually inspect the airways. The high-definition camera allows the doctor to check for structural abnormalities, narrowing of the airways, or signs of inflammation and disease.
Also known as a “lung wash.” If the doctor suspects a deep-rooted infection or inflammatory lung disease, they will squirt a small amount of sterile saline water into a specific part of the lung and immediately suction it back out. This fluid collects loose cells and bacteria, which are then sent to our Clinical Microbiology and Cytopathology labs for precise identification.
If a suspicious mass or nodule is found during the visual inspection, the doctor can pass tiny, specialized instruments through the bronchoscope tube to safely snip a microscopic piece of tissue. This biopsy is then sent to our Histopathology lab to check for lung cancer or other chronic diseases, completely avoiding the need for an external surgical incision.
Our pulmonologists can use the bronchoscope to clear out thick mucus plugs that are preventing a lung from expanding, or to safely extract foreign bodies that have been accidentally inhaled.
